‘All by Myself’ and ‘Hungry Eyes’ singer Eric Carmen passes away at the age of 74.
Born in Cleveland, Ohio, Carmen became well-known as the lead singer of The Raspberries, a pop-rock group from the 1970s whose well-groomed hair and coordinated outfits seemed to be a nod to The Beatles and other iconic British Invasion bands.
In 1970, we went absolutely against the grain and were incredibly successful,” Carmen stated in his website bio. “FM radio embraced prog-rock, which was “in.” I detested it. The Who, The Beatles, The Byrds, The Stones, The Beach Boys, and Small Faces were all bands I adored. I adored bands with writing abilities!
The group produced successes like “I Wanna Be with You” and the thought-provoking “Go All the Way,” which was performed from a female perspective. However, it wouldn’t take long for the gang to start to fall apart.
Carmen stated, “They were liked by girls and critics alike, but their eighteen-year-old record-buying brothers said no.” “We imploded because we got frustrated.”
After the band disbanded in 1975, Carmen focused his solo career on hit songs like “All by Myself,” which Celine Dion went on to sing to legendary heights, and “Hungry Eyes,” which served as the seductive soundtrack for Johnny and Baby’s growing romance in “Dirty Dancing.”
One of Carmen’s most well-known songs was composed for a motion picture soundtrack. He co-wrote “Almost Paradise,” which was sung by Mike Reno and Ann Wilson as the movie “Footloose”‘s love theme. When the soundtrack was nominated for Best Album of Original Score Written for a Motion Picture, the song received his one and only Grammy nomination.
“All by Myself,” “Make Me Lose Control,” and “Hungry Eyes” all spent more than four months in the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100 list. Thirteen of Carmen’s songs were included in the chart.
Carmen said no to a reunion with The Raspberries in 1999 for the release of the “Raspberries Refreshed” EP. Still, he did go onstage with them in 2004 for a show at Cleveland’s House of Blues, and the group went on a brief mini-tour in 2005, according to the Encyclopedia of Cleveland History from Case Western Reserve.
The group’s final performance together was at Cleveland’s KeyBank State Theatre in December 2007.
